# Tags

Tags enable you to group hosts, endpoints, and observations. Tags are a fundamental feature of Enginsight. Once you have added multiple hosts, endpoints, and observations to Enginsight, tags are essential to working effectively with Enginsight.

Therefore, start grouping your assets with tags in a useful way early on.

{% hint style="info" %}
All endpoints are automatically given the tag `endpoint` by Enginsight. All newly created hosts get the tag `host` as well as `server` or `client`, also: `windows` or `linux`. All observations get the tag `observation` as well as `snmp`, `ping` or `ports`.
{% endhint %}

## Using tags

You can use tags to...

* switch [alerts](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/platform/alarme) to multiple assets at once.
* use [searchbar](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/platform/searchbar) to search your assets.
* use the [Policy Manager](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/platform/legacy/hosts-agent-pulsar/policy-manager) to manage the settings of multiple hosts together.
* define [blocking rules](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/shield#autonomous-blockingautonomous-actions) for the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS).
* assign [whitelist entries](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/legacy/hosts-agent-pulsar/intrusion-detection-system#whitelist) of the Intrusion Detection System (IDS).
* assign [plugins](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/platform/legacy/hosts-agent-pulsar/plugins) to be executed regularly.
* manage [machine learning metrics](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/platform/legacy/hosts-agent-pulsar/machine-learning).
* Assign [configuration lists](https://docs.enginsight.com/docs/master/operation/dashboard#configurations).
