# Target Groups

Defining a target group allows you to group target systems on which a penetration test should be performed. You can define targets by specifying IP addresses, host names, IP address ranges, subnets, Watchdogs, or endpoints.

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Please note:** A maximum of **2,048 targets (IP addresses)** can be scanned in a single audit, regardless of whether the targets are reachable. If you perform a penetration test on a target group containing more than 2,048 IP addresses, the remaining IP addresses are discarded and only the first 2,048 are processed. We recommend that you define **no more than 1,000 targets (IP addresses)** for an audit.
{% endhint %}

:compass: Navigate to **Penetration Tests** → **Target Groups** to show a list of all configured target groups. If you have not created any target groups yet, this view is empty.

The [target group overview](#target-groups-overview) provides information such as:

* whether and which Watchdogs and endpoints are assigned to a target group.
* whether and which IP addresses and IP address ranges are assigned to a target group.
* whether and which IP address ranges are excluded from a target group.

You can also [add new target groups](#add-target-groups).
