# How can I scan public IP address ranges with the Enginsight Watchdog?

Watchdog is an Enginsight component that is installed in a subnet to monitor for example network devices on which no Pulsar can be installed or which are to be inventoried without using an agent.

In addition to internal IP addresses, Watchdog can also scan public IP addresses. However, you must explicitly allow this in the Watchdog configuration file.

Follow these steps:

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Log in to the server on which the Watchdog that you want to use to scan public IP address ranges is installed.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Open the Watchdog configuration file using the following command:

```
sudo nano /opt/enginsight/watchdog/config.json
```

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Set the `acceptPublicIPRanges` parameter to `true`:

<pre><code>{
    "channel": "",
    "options": {
<strong>        "acceptPublicIPRanges": true
</strong>    },
    "watchdog": {
        "_id": "&#x3C;WatchdogID>"
    },
    "api": {
        "url": "&#x3C;URL_API>",
        "proxy": "",
        "noProxy": "",
        "accessKey": {
            "id": "*****",
            "secret": "*****"
        }
    }
}
</code></pre>

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Save the configuration file (**Ctrl** + **o**) and confirm the save process. Close the configuration file (**Ctrl** + **x**).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Restart the Watchdog using the following command to apply the changes:

```
sudo systemctl restart ngs-watchdog
```

{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
